What is the Polar Mission?

Polar circumnavigation is complete navigation around Earth through both the North Pole and the South Pole. The Rockwell Polar Flight was the first to complete a Polar Circumnavigation in 1965 that spanned more than 62 days. The Classic Lear Jet Foundation is planning their own Polar Mission from April 30 - May 3, 2025 as a fundraiser for their mission of restoring to flying condition the first Learjet delivered to a customer in 1964. Global Jetcare, an air ambulance service based in Florida, is handling all flight arrangements and donating their Learjet and crew of four in support of the Foundation’s work.

As part of the approval process for the Polar Mission, the crew must have a scientific research plan and will be conducting an EPA experiment in Antarctica in conjunction with the National Science Foundation. At each stop on the flight, the crew will perform research by placing a scale on the wing of the plane to help determine if the Earth is bigger on the Equator and document it. The crew will have to wear exposure suits during the experiment, receive scientific research training prior to the flight and sign an agreement that they will not disturb any part of the environment at any stop during the Polar Mission.

This is the second circumnavigation flight that Global Jetcare has spearheaded to raise funds for the Classic Lear Jet Foundation, with The Century Mission being the first in April of 2024, setting an official around the world speed record and raising thousands of dollars for the Classic Lear Jet Foundation.

THE ROCKWELL POLAR FLIGHT

November 14-17, 1965

Polar circumnavigation is complete navigation around Earth through both the North Pole and the South Pole. Captains Fred Lester Austin, Jr., and Harrison Finch, two retired Trans World Airlines pilots, became the first to complete a pole-to-pole circumnavigation flight between 14 and 17 November 1965 in a modified Flying Tiger Line Boeing 707-349C carrying 40 scientists, guests and crew.

To make the trip possible, the plane - nicknamed Pole Cat - had to be modified with two additional fuel tanks installed in the main cabin. The trip which started and ended in Honolulu, Hawaii took 62 hours and 27 minutes.
